Assistive Listening Device System at CWPB Public Meetings: Did You Know?
The City of West Palm Beach offers a state-of-the-art Assistive Listening System (ALS) in City Commission Chambers and Flagler Gallery
WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (April 15, 2019) -- To serve our community better and be more inclusive during our public meetings, the City of West Palm Beach offers a state-of-the-art Assistive Listening System (ALS) in City Commission Chambers and Flagler Gallery -- located at City Hall, 401 Clematis Street--   so residents, citizens and visitors can hear better during public meetings. Four devices for the hearing-impaired in the Chambers are permanently located next to the Clerk’s position near the dais; four devices for the Flagler Gallery are available upon request. The public may use the attached earphones or bring your own for your convenience!

What is assistive listening? The ALS is an amplifier that brings sound directly into the ear by separating sounds, particularly speech, that a person wants to hear from background noise. The ALS improves the “speech to noise” ratio. According to the National Association of the Deaf, research indicates that people who are hard of hearing require a volume increase of about 15 – 20 dB to achieve the same level of understanding as people with normal hearing; an ALS allows them to achieve this gain for themselves without making it too loud for everyone else.

This system is in line with the City’s mission of partnering with our community to deliver exceptional customer service that enhances quality of life.

In accordance of the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), persons in need of a special accommodation to participate in the City’s public meetings shall, within three days prior any proceeding, contact the City Clerks’ office at 401 Clematis Street, West Palm Beach, Florida {(561) 822-1210}.
