District 3 City Commissioner
Kimberly Mitchell
Career:
Kimberly Mitchell was elected to the West Palm Beach City Commission in March 2002. Professionally, she serves as Senior Vice President in charge of Florida for Loop Capital Markets, a Chicago-based investment banking firm.
Experience:
Ms. Mitchell's passion for effecting public policy began some 17 years ago, while serving as an aide to then County Commissioner Carol Roberts. Her knowledge on a wide variety of issues became even greater when she went on to serve the Florida Legislature as senior aide to Representative Greg Gay.
With her philosophy of governing firmly taking hold, Ms. Mitchell entered the private sector, where she began advocating for a number of public policy changes affecting minority and women businesses and economic development.
One of her major accomplishments came when the Florida Legislature passed landmark legislation leading to the creation of Florida's first minority-owned property and casualty homeowner's insurance companies.
Since beginning her tenure as City Commissioner, Ms. Mitchell has continued to fight for attainable home ownership for low income families and has been a catalyst for the redevelopment of the northwest corridor, including the creation of the Citizen's Master Plan for Pleasant City. Commissioner Mitchell was also the leader in establishing the first Hispanic Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) in the City of West Palm Beach.
Commissioner Mitchell continues to believe in the fair and equitable consideration of the needs of the western communities, while making the reinvestment of the 100-year-old infrastructure in the City's eastern corridors a funding priority. In addition, Commissioner Mitchell strongly supported and encouraged the recent increases in funding for greater police presence in the northend's blighted neighborhoods.
In her role as City Commissioner, Ms. Mitchell also serves as a Board Member of the City's CRA, where she knows the first step to reenergizing the downtown begins with a major departure from the current demographic target market - to an older, cultural, shopping and dining demographic.
Civic Involvement:
Commissioner Mitchell is a former board member of the Florida Education Practices Commission and is a founding member of Mission Sandbox, a local, non-profit organization focused on helping the residents of the blighted neighborhoods in West Palm Beach.
Currently serving as a board member for the Urban League of Palm Beach County, Commissioner Mitchell also serves as a board member of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County and the Armory Art Center.
Most recently, Commissioner Mitchell was selected to serve again as Chair for the 2005 Relay for Life event of the American Cancer Society. She also served as the Community Awareness Chair for the Inaugural Marathon of the Palm Beaches.
Personal Information:
The daughter of Apollo XIV astronaut Edgar Mitchell and Anita Mitchell Bridgeman, Kimberly Mitchell was born on October 15, 1961, as the oldest of three children, who grew up in Palm Beach County.
Education:
Ms. Mitchell received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Florida State University.
