In 2007, a traffic and safety study was prepared for the section of Parker Avenue between Southern Boulevard and Okeechobee Boulevard in response to neighborhood and City Commission concerns related to safety and speeding.
The study showed that Parker Avenue has the potential for conversion from a four-lane to a three-lane configuration without adversely impacting overall corridor operations. Approach lanes of Parker Avenue with the signalized intersections at Southern Boulevard, Tuscaloosa Street, Belvedere Road and Okeechobee Boulevard would remain unchanged.
Factors favoring conversion include sufficient right-of-way and paved roadway that would not require additional property, and the ability to restore the roadway to the original four-lane configuration without significant difficulties, if warranted by future conditions.
The proposed work will include the milling and resurfacing of the roadway, construction of center islands per plan, and restriping.
